Most
people give little thought to the pens they write
with, especially since the printers in
modern
homes and offices mean that very 1 things are
handwritten. All too often,people buy
a pen
based only on 2 , and wonder why they are not
satisfied once they begin to use it.
However, buying a pen that you'll enjoy is not
3 if you keep the following in mind.
First of all, a pen should fit 4 in your hand
and be easy to use. The thickness of the pen is
the most important characteristic 5
comfort. Having a small hand and thick fingers,
you may
be comfortable with a thin pen. If you
have a 6 hand and thicker fingers, you may 7
a
fatter pen. The length of a pen can also
influence comfort. A pen that is too 8 can
easily feel
top-heavy and unstable.
Then, the writing point of the pen should 9
the ink to flow evenly(均匀地) while the
pen
remains in touch with the paper. This will make it
possible for you to create a 10 line of
writing. The point should also be sensitive
enough to 11 ink from running when the pen is
lifted. A point that does not block the 12
may leave drops of ink,as you pick the pen up and
put it down again.
13 , the pen
should make a thick, dark line. Fine-line pens may
make up for 14
handwriting, but fine(very
thin or narrow), delicate lines do not attract
15 next to printed
text, as, for example, a
signature on a printed letter. A broader line, on
the other hand, gives an
impression of
confidence and authority.

The two-and-a-half-year-old girl

train crash, will
probably not lose her legs
after doctors’ untiring efforts.
The train
crash happened late Saturday when train D301 hit
train D3115 near Wenzhou in
Jiangsu Province,
leaving at least 39 people dead and 192 others
injured. Xiang was found alive 21
hours after
the accident but lost both of her parents.
A
specialized medical team carried out an operation
on Xiang’s leg Sunday night to improve
the
blood flow.
On Sunday, Vice Premier Zhang
Dejiang, on behalf of President Hu Jintao and

local authorities to
collect all available
resources to aid the injured and set up a medical

relatives of the dead,”
said Zhang.
Wang

who gave free
rides, and those citizens who
lined up to donate blood at night,” said Li

with his right leg in a
fixed device and scratches over his body.

B
There are desert plants which survive the
dry season in the form of inactive seeds. There
are
also desert insects which survive as
inactive larvae (幼虫). In addition, difficult as it
is to believe,
there are desert fish which can
survive through years of drought (干旱) in the form
of inactive
eggs. These are the shrimps (虾)
that live in the Mojave Desert, an extremely dry
place in the
southwest of the United States
where shade temperatures of over 50℃ are often
recorded.
The eggs of the Mojave shrimps
look like grains of sand both in size and
appearance. When
enough spring rain falls to
form a lake, once every two to five years, these
eggs hatch. Then the
water is soon filled with
millions of tiny shrimps about a millimetre long
which feed on tiny plant
and animal organisms
(有机物)which also grow in the temporary desert lake.
Within a week, the
shrimps grow from their
original 1 millimetre to a length of about 1.5
centimetres.
Throughout the time that the
shrimps are rapidly maturing, the water in the
lake equally
rapidly evaporates(蒸发).
Therefore, for the shrimps it is a race against
time. By the twelfth day,
however, when they
are about 3 centimetre long, hundreds of tiny eggs
form on the underbodies
of the females.
Usually by this time, all that remains of the lake
is a large, muddy patch of wet soil.
On the
13
th
day, the shrimps lay their eggs in
the mud. Then, having ensured that their species
will survive, the shrimps die as the last of
the water evaporates.
If enough rain falls
the next year to form another lake, the eggs
hatch, and once again the
shrimps pass rapidly
through their cycle of growth, adulthood, egg-
laying, and death. Some years
there is not
enough rain to form a lake: in this case, the eggs
will remain dormant for another
years, or even
longer if necessary.
31. What is the
passage mainly about?
A. The birth of the
Mojave shrimps. B. The survival of desert
shrimps.
C. The survival of desert life.
D. Life in the Mojave Desert.
32. Which of the
following is the MOST unique feature of Mojave
shrimps?
A. Their lives are brief.
B. They feed on plant and animal organisms.
C. Their eggs can survive years of drought. D.
They lay their eggs in the mud.
33. By saying
“...for the shrimps it is a race against time.”
(Line2, Para.3), the author means that
the
shrimps have to_________.
A. swim faster to
avoid danger in the rapidly evaporating lake
B. swim faster to catch the animal organisms on
which they survive
C. lay as many eggs as
possible within limited time
D. complete
their life cycle within the time permitted by the
environment
34. What doe the underlined word
“dormant” in the last paragraph most probably
mean?
A. Inactive. B. Sleeping. C.
Safe. D. Dead.
35. What can be inferred from
the passage?
A. Appearance and size are the
most important for life to survive in the desert.
B. A species must be able to grow up quickly
in order to survive.
C. Shrimps are the only
species with a life cycle of 13 days.
D.
Some species develop a unique life pattern to
survive in extremely hard condition.
C
I’ve been writing for most of my life. The
book Writing Without Teachers introduced me to
one distinction and one practice that has
helped my writing processes greatly. The
distinction is
between the creative mind and
the critical mind. While you need to make use of
both to get to a
finished result, they cannot
work in parallel no matter how much we might like
to think so.
Trying to criticize writing on
the fly is possibly the single greatest barrier to
writing that most
of us meet. If you are
listening to a 5th grade English teacher correct
your grammar while you are
trying to seize a
fleeting (稍纵即逝的) thought, the thought will die. If
you seize the fleeting
thought and simply
share it with the world in raw form, no one is
likely to understand. You must
learn to create
first and then criticize if you want to make
writing the tool for thinking.
The practice
that can help you past your bad habits of trying
to edit as you write is what
Elbow calls “free
writing.” In free writing, the objective is to get
words down on paper non-stop,
usually for
15-20 minutes. No stopping, no going back, no
criticizing. The goal is to get the words
flowing. As the words begin to flow, the ideas
will come from the shadows and let themselves be
captured on your notepad or your screen.
Now you have raw materials that you can begin
to work with using the critical mind. You can
sit on the side and watch quietly. Most
likely, you will believe that this will take more
time than
you actually have and you
will end up staring blankly at the pages as the
deadline draws near.
Instead of staring at a
blank start filling it with words no matter how
bad. Halfway through
your available time, stop
and rework your raw writing into something closer
to finished product.
Move back and forth until
you run out of time and the final result will most
likely be far better
than your current
practices.
36. When the author says the
creative mind and the critical mind “cannot work
in parallel” (Line
4, Para. 1) in the writing
process, he means ________.
A. no one can be
both creative and critical B. they cannot be
regarded as equally
important
C. they
are in constant conflict with each other D. one
cannot use them at the same time
37. What
prevents people from writing on is ________.
A. putting their ideas in raw form B. attempting
to edit as they write
C. ignoring grammar
rules D. trying to seize fleeting thoughts
38. What is the chief aim of the first stage
of writing?
A. To organize one’s thoughts
logically. B. To choose an appropriate topic.
C. To get one’s ideas down. D. To collect
raw materials.
39. One common concern of
writers about “free writing” is that ________.
A. it overstresses the role of the creative
mind B. it takes too much time to edit afterwards
C. it may bring about too much criticism D.
it does not help them to think clearly
40. In
what way does the critical mind help the writer in
the writing process?
A. It refines his
writing into better shape. B. It helps him to
come up with new ideas.
C. It saves the
writing time available to him. D. It allows him to
sit on the side and observe.
D
With
all the wars, fighting and sadness in the world
today, it's not only necessary, but also
essential to have a good sense of humor just
to help us get through each and every day of our
lives. Putting a smile on someone's face when
you know they are feeling down in the dumps
(处
于沮丧中), as the saying goes, makes me feel
good and warms my heart.
How would you
feel if you could not joke around with your wife,
husband, child, co-workers,
neighbors, close
friends, or even just someone that you are
standing in line with at your corner
store? I
am always saying things that make others smile or
laugh, even if I don't know the person
I'm
joking around with. My Grandma always found humor
in everything she did, even if it was the
hardest job anyone could imagine. This not
only relieves stress in any situation, but also is
common courtesy(礼貌)to speak to others that are
around you.
I know of a few people that
don't have a funny bone in their bodies, as they
say. Everyone
around them could be rolling on
the floor after hearing a great joke and they
would sit there
without the slightest smile on
their face. They don't get the joke that makes
others laugh. I am
busting a gut while they
just sit there, looking at me as if I were from
outer space. How can
people not get a really
funny joke?
Laughing is essential to
keeping your stress levels under control. Without
humor we would
find ourselves with a lot of
psychological problems, or on a lot of medications
to keep us from
going crazy. There is too much
sadness in this present world. It drives people
crazy. We all need to
find a way to bypass the
sadness and bring a little light into our lives.
So, I believe our best
medicine is to get
together and tell some jokes and have some fun
laughing together.
41. According to the
author, humor is useful in the aspect that
____________.
A. it makes people more
confident B. it can pick up people’ s spirits
C. it can help get rid of the cruelty in the
world D. it can help people get on well with
others
42. The author answers the question in
the second paragraph with ___________.
A.
facts and descriptions B. evidence and
argument
C. examples and conclusion D.
stories and persuasion
43. The phrase
A. explaining carefully B. speaking loud
C. keeping silent D. laughing hard
44.
In writing the passage, the author mainly intends
to __________.
A .talk about his own
understanding of humor
B. encourage
people to be humorous in daily life
C.
introduce a practical way to get through daily
life Ks5u
D. convince people of the power of
being optimistic about life
is the author'
s attitude towards the present world?
A.
Positive. B. Critical. C. Satisfied. D.
Indifferent.

Over 80 students of the Winthrop Middle
School Drama Club gave performances at the
annual Winter Shows, which were fun and
successful. Though it takes a lot of time and
efforts,
they benefited a lot from them.
I think it good for the students to take part in
group activities. It would promote teamwork
and help them get along with each other and
fit into the society in the future.
The
report of Winter Shows reminds me of a farming
activity with my classmates. During the
three-
day activity, we set out together for the farmland
every morning, cooperated to grow rice
in the
field and worked until evening. Working hard in
the field all day, we were really very tired,
but by cooperating with each other, we got all
the work well done, which made us very happy.
After returning home, I found that I benefited so
much from the farming activity. It not only
helped me, a city-dweller, to learn more about
life in the countryside but also encouraged me to
cherish food. What is most important is that
it taught me how to work in a team. It was one of
the most unforgettable experiences in my life.
