Understanding
about culture and cross-cultural communication
Before taking
this course, in my opinion, culture and cross-
cultural communication
is what foreign
language students should learn. People who have no
plan to go aboard
doesn’t need to
understand it.
After a taking this course for almost a
semester, I
’v totally changed my view.
As
the
emergence
of
globalization
has
been
observed.
Culture
and
cross-cultural
communication
are not limited in those people who major in it.
All the human beings
began to own a
closer connection with it.
Nowadays, not only has
culture and cross-cultural communication been a
way to
communicate
with
each
other,
it’s
also
a
symbol
of
the
rapid
social
development.
Cross-
cultural communication
contributes to learning other countries’
language
、
living
habits
、
national
spirits and their own specific culture. On the
other hand, it helps us to
absorb other
countries
’ advantages and abandon the
disadvantages we have.

The importance of learning
about the similarities and differences
in different cultures
With
the
development
of
current
society,
people
around
the
world
communicate
with
foreigners
more
frequently
than
ever.
Globalization
has
become
an
inevitable
trend.
We
may
have
to
compete
or
live
with
people
from
different
countries
in
the
near
future.
Therefore,
learning
about
the
similarities
and
differences
in
different
cultures seems
more and more significant for us.
In
addition,
learning
about
it
may
contribute
to
broadening
our
horizon,
making
more friends and a
scending
literary accomplishment.

There are countless cultural
differences between china and the united states.
Here I
will just pick up three points
to make comparisons.
3.1 table
manners
Table manners can reflect a
country
’
s inner value from
some aspects.
In china, we usually have the tradition
to share several dishes with people on the
table,
which
reflect
the
national
value,
collectivism.
However,
in
America,
people
have their private
plate and eat in it, which represent their
individualism.
Besides, we use different tableware. In
china, there are only chopsticks and spoons.
However,
in
the
US,
we
have
the
red
glass,
wine
cup,
dessert
spoon,
dessert
fork,
butter knife and the
main course fork.
As
for detailed table manners, American has a complex
etiquette procedures.
For
example, you should memorize the
order to use fork and knife, fork and
spoon. If the
knife
and
fork
are
completely
on
the
plate,
it
says
that
you
had
finished
the
meal.
