Many
foreign
students
report
feeling
lonely
or
unwelcome
in
Australia.
Those
feelings
are
among the reasons why Australia is
taking a close look at its international education
industry. But
wherever international
students go, making friends may not always be
easy. Elisabeth Gareis of
Baruch
College in New York surveyed 454 international
students. They were attending four-year
colleges and graduate schools in the
American South and Northeast.
Students
from
English-speaking
countries
and
from northern
and
central
Europe
were
more
likely to be happy with their
friendships. But 38% of the international students
said they had no
close friends in the
United States. And half of the students from East
Asia said they were unhappy
with the
number of American friends they had. Thirty
percent said they wished their friendships
could be deeper and more
meaningful.
Professor Gareis says, “Students from
East Asia have cultures that are different on many
levels
from the culture in the United
States. There are also language problems, and
maybe some social
skills, such as small
talks, which are possibly not as important in
their native countries, where it's
not
as
important
to
start
friendships
with
small

VOA's

her
own
survey
to
find
out
how
American
students and foreign students relate to
each other. More than 100 students, about half of
them
American,
answered
her
online
questions.
Half
of
the
international
students
and
60
%
of
the
Americans
said they related as well or better to the other
group than to their own group.
Professor Gareis says,
“International students who make friends with host
nationals are, overall,
more
satisfied
with
their
stay
in
the
host
country.
They
have
better
language
skills,
better
academic performance
and better attitude
s toward the host

In 2015, a man named
Nigel Richards memorized 386, 000 words in the
entire

in just nine

Richards' impressive feat is a
useful
example to show how artificial intelligence
works
—
real AI. Both of
Richard and AI take in
massive amounts
of data to achieve goals with unlimited memory and

The potential
applications for AI are extremely exciting.
Because AI can outperform humans at

so.
But not every job
will be replaced by AI. In fact
four
types of jobs are not at risk at all. First,
there are creative jobs. AI needs to be
given a goal to optimize. It cannot invent, like
scientists,

Second, the complex, strategic

Then
there

Are you worried that these three types of jobs

Not

worry,
as
the
fourth
type

much
larger:
jobs

These

compassion,
trust
and
sympathy

which
AI
does not have. And even
if AI tried to fake it, nobody would want a robot
telling them they have
cancer, or a
robot to babysit their children.
So there will still be jobs in the
age of AI. The key then must be retraining the
workforce so
people

them.

When he was
young, Louis Armstrong was taking what was called
“Creole jazz”, which was also

dance
music,
and
combining
it
with
trumpeter

Buddy
Bolden,
to
create
what
would

Armstrong accomplished that with
almost no formal training. He received little
training before
he was placed in the
New Orleans Colored Waif's Home at the age of 12,
after a run-in (

the

The

turned

for
he
also
had
the
opportunity to play in a real

While at the
Waif's, Armstrong also got the chance to hear some
of the city's finest musicians.
Cornetist Freddie Keppard performed in
a nearby club. So did
trumpeter and
bandleader, King
Joe Oliver, who took
the boy under his wing and taught him how to read
music and work on his
playing
technique.
When Oliver
left for Chicago, Armstrong chose to stay in New
Orleans and work with some of
the other
top musicians of the day. In Chicago, King Oliver
offered him a place in his band in 1922.
It became Armstrong's biggest challenge

the band had no parts

Armstrong moved to New York City in

Their

an
important factor in
determining which colleges will admit them or
whether any will be admitted

The Scholastic Aptitude Test measures one's
mathematical ability and use of the English
language. Traditionally, the English
part involved grammatical questions and paragraphs
that test
reading
comprehension.
But the
SAT folks have added a single question, to be
answered in an essay, hand-written on the
spot. That's an interesting way to test
writing ability, but content aside, have you ever

people's

Or

Students write numbers and sign their

forget, we all have to turn to handwriting from
time to time, as computers
go down when
power goes out.
Then how
to improve the handwriting? Well, with a few
simple steps you can improve your
hand
writing.
Position the
pen. You should hold the pen between the
forefinger and the thumb, then rest it
near the first knuckle
(

The rest of your fingers should be curled
(

under your
hand and your hand should remain

Evaluate your

Take

Our mother earth
is going through a very tough situation and we,
the entire human race, are
destroying
our environment or unconsciously without even
realizing its consequences. Now we
have
to act very smartly and plan something to sustain
what we still have, getting all necessary
support from nature to lead healthy
lives.
Gardening
is
always
an
excellent
and
environmentally
friendly
idea.
If
you
can
go
for
sustainable gardening, then it will be
even more useful for all. Gardening is a favorite
hobby for
many. It is time to
channelize your hobby towards a more meaningful
motivation.
When we do
gardening we need to use different ingredients to
grow plants. Some of them are
natural
resources
like
water,
soil,
sunshine,
and
many
things
like
this.
Using
these
resources
smartly is a part
of sustainable gardening. Some simple techniques
include: use less water and
organic
things to grow plants; try to store rainwater so
that you can use them for gardening; try
using
less
energy
to
drive
devices;
avoid
using
plastics
in
any
form
while
gardening;
reuse
the
leaves from your garden
to fertilize them. These are the basic sustainable
measures. To do so we
need to have
proper knowledge about gardening and its
requirements so that we can use proper
resources without wasting any of
them.
In today's busy
life we don't get much time to spend on our
environment. Gardening gives us a
chance to do so. We can also have some
pesticide-free and fresh food if we grow them in
our
garden. This is the right time to
do some good to protect our own environment and
gardening is
one of the easiest ways.
