People blink their eyes
tens of thousands of times every day, Scientists
have long believed blinking can keep
the eyes wet. But a new study suggests
it has a more important purpose.
An
international team of scientists studied the
blinking of human eyelids. The team reported it to
researchers
from the University of
California at Berkeley. The magazine Current
Biology reported their findings.
The
team said it found that blinking can make us focus
on what we are seeing. It said that when we blink
our
eyelids, the eyeballs roll back
into the place where they are. However, the
researchers found the eyes don’t always
return to the same position. They say
this causes the brain to tell the eye muscles to
adjust(
调整
) our eyesight.
Garret Mauls was the lead writer of the
report. He serves as an assistant professor of
psychology (
心理学
) at
Nan yang Technological University in
Singapore. The researchers say that without such
corrections we would not
be able to see
the things around us clearly.
Researchers say they asked volunteers
to sit in a dark room while looking at a small dot
on a piece of paper
they
used
special
cameras
to
follow
the
volunteer's
blinks
and
eye
movements.
After
each
blink,
the
dot
was
moved a
little to the right. The volunteers did not notice
this, but the brain did.
It
followed the movement and
directed the eye muscles to focus on
the dot again. The dot was moved in this way 30
times before the volunteers'
eyes
changed their focus to the place where they
thought it would be.

Dear
Maliah and Sasha,
I know that you've
both had a lot of fun these two years, going to
picnics, eating all kinds of junk food your
mother and I probably shouldn't have
let you have. But I also know that it hasn't
always been easy for you and
Mom, so
now I want to tell you a little more about why I
decided to take our family on this journey.
When I was a young man, I thought life
was all about me-about how I'd make my way in the
world, become
successful, and get the
things I want. But then the two of you came into
my world with all your smiles that never
fail to fill my heart and light up my
day. And suddenly, all my big plans for myself
didn't seem so important any
more. I
soon found that the greatest joy in my life was
the joy I saw in yours. And I realized that my own
life
wouldn't be so important unless I
knew that you had every chance for happiness. In
the end, girls, that's why I ran
for
President: because of what I want for you and for
every child in this country.
I want all
our children to go to schools to know more about
the world around them. I want them to have the
chance to go to college-even if their
parents aren't rich. And I want them to get good
jobs: jobs that pay well and
give them
chances to realize their dreams.
I am
so proud of both of you. I love you more than you
can ever know. And I am grateful every day for
your
patience and humor as we prepare
to start our new life together.

For
children, the internet is a double-edged sword. In
other words, being able to get online can be both
good
and bad for kids.
On
the good side, digital technology(
数

技

) can connected a child to information
and to a larger
community. It can bring
good chances for work. But on the bad side, it can
also bring great harm and stress ---
especially for a child who does not
know how to use the internet correctly.
A new report from the United Nations
International Children’s Emergency Fund, or
UNICEF, explores both
the good and bad
of the bad of the internet for young people.
Being online has many benefits. In
fact, the internet can change a chil
d’s
life, says Laurence Chand. He is the
Director of Data Research Policy for
UNICEF.
The UNICEF reports that around
one-
third of the world’s youth
--- most in developing countries ---
are not
online. For example, in Africa,
only 40 percent of children are online. In Europe,
by contrast, 88 percent are.
If your
child is online, the website Parenting. com gives
the following safety advice.
Know the
online sites your child uses. You should also know
where they are online and with who.
Decide how much time your child spends
online and how they use the internet

privacy. Tell them:
