Class Afloat is a Canadian school on a
tall ship! The ship is 210 feet
long
and 30 feet wide, and it can take up to sixty
students . The
classrooms are well-
equipped and comfortable, and
there
’
s even a
library! It isn
’
t
necessary to know anything about sailing----
students can
learn on the ship.
Not all the students are Canadian.
There
’
s usually a mix of
nationalities. This year, there are
also students from Mexico, the US,
Germany, and Turkey.
There
’
s a mix of ages too.
There are high school
students sixteen
to eighteen years old, a
nd first-year
college students.
The teachers design
special study programs for each student. Because
the school is a ship , you can do some
exciting classes,for example,
Marine
Biology (studying the animals and plants in the
sea) and History
of Geography courses
about the places you visit. Students also learn
all
about sailing!
Students
don
’
t just study. They must
also clean, cook and sail the
ship. In
their free time, students can rest, read, or watch
a movie. In the
evening, they relax
with friends and have club meetings.
Every sixteen to twenty days, the ship
stops in a port for three to six
days.
In port there
’
s lots for the
students to do-- homestays, camping
trips , museum tours, cultural events,
hiking , etc. They also go boating
and
do other water sports. Parents can meet up with
the students in one
port every term.
Students also take part in two
volunteer programs in Senegal and
the
Dominican Republic. They help local families in
different ways, for
example, with basic
health matters or starting a business. Students
learn
how, with just a little
money and time, they can make changes
that
improve
other people
’
s lives.
Paragraph 2 we can get the information

Greece and Rome did not have kitchens. Also ,
people didn

t
have to store food at home if they ate
their meals at these restaurants.
Later, restaurant began to open in
China. In the early 1100s, more
than
one million people lived in the city of Hangzhou,
China. It was a very
busy city, and
people had money. All of these people had to eat.
Smart
cooks started cooking and selling
food along the Imperial Way, a very
big
street in the city. Unlike in ancient Greece and
Rome, people in China
could choose food
from a menu. They didn
’
t
have to eat the same food
as everyone
else.
For the next several centuries,
there were restaurants all over the
world. People could buy food on the
street or at inns-- small hotels. Then
in the middle of the 1700s, restaurants
started opening in Paris. These
restaurants were more similar to
restaurants we know today. There was a
bigger variety of food, and eating in
these restaurants was a more
enjoyable
experience. In the 19th century, trains made
travel much faster
and simpler. In the
end, this kind of restaurant began to appear all
over
Europe and in other parts of the
world.
Now, restaurants are everywhere.

That

After eating, I drive

It
is a hard time for me to drive back. When I arrive

I chose this way. I want Sally to have a
chance to find herself. I want to learn
who she is. If I don

I

:
Last week, we had a discussion about
the topic
”
To change or
not
”
.
I think
different people have different choices to deal
with problems. For
example, when
meeting with the weight problem, some people
decide to
take exercises to lose weight
while others think they
can
’
t do anything
about.
When I
was in Grade 7, I had difficulty with my spoken
English.
Instead of giving up, I chose
to change.
I tried my best
to listen to tapes
and practice
speaking everyday. Now my pronunciation has been
improved a lot.
In a word,
facing problems, we should take actions to change.
Surely it will make a great difference.

World

The British

But why choose these 100

It all started with a

Neil MacGregor, who was once director

asked by BBC

collection.
The objects had to include
things from the beginning of human history
about 2 million years ago to the
present day.
MacGregor accepted, and
took four years to choose each object
himself.
In 2010, MacGregor
appeared on BBC radio, giving a detailed

Almost
all animals need to sleep to stay healthy. But
sleeping can
also be dangerous because
other animals may hurt those who are
sleeping. This leads to many different
ways of sleeping that help them
stay
safe. Some of these ways may surprise you!
Almost all bats sleep upside down. They
hang from a branch of a tree
or the
ceiling of a cave. Up high, bats are safe from
most other animals. If
they are in
danger, they just fly away.
A dolphin
sleeps with just half its brain at a time. It must
stay awake
to breathe and to watch for
danger. Dolphin mothers and babies can go
without sleep for as long as two months
to stay safe.
Some ducks sleep with
just half their brai
ns, too. These
ducks often
sleep in a line. The ducks
at both ends help to keep the group safe. They

keep one eye open to watch for danger.
The ducks in the middle sleep
deeply
with both eyes closed.
Seals breathe
air, but that doesn
’
t stop
some of them from sleeping
underwater.
They hold their breath and dive deep to sleep for
up to
twenty minutes at a time.
Sleeping deep underwater helps these seals
stay safe from animals that hunt them
near the surface.
Horses often sleep
standing up. Their legs lock in place so they
don
’
t fall over. If a horse
is lying down, it needs a
long time to
get up. A horse
can run from danger
more quickly if it is already standing.
A flamingo can sleep while standing on
one leg. The standing leg
locks so it
stays straight. The other leg remains close to the
flamingo
’
s
body.
Its head rests on its back. A flamingo lives (and
sleeps) near many
other birds to stay
safe.
Some seabirds can sleep while
they fly. These large birds spend most
of their lives over the ocean. They are
in danger on the water, but they
are
safe in the air. They fly for many hours without
flapping
(拍打)
their
wings. Sometimes they sleep while they
are flying.
Would you like to sleep how
they sleep?

The next day when I got home from
school, I discovered, on m y bed,
a
jacket which was not what I had expected. I went
close to the jacket
slowly, as if it
were a stranger.
From the kitchen
mother shouted that my jacket was in the closet. I
rushed and pulled at the clothes in the
closet, hoping the jacket on the
bed
wasn

brother. No luck, I wanted to cry because it
was so ugly and so big. But I knew
I

time before
I

enemy, thinking bad
things before I
took off my old and small jacket.
I put
the big jacket on. I stood in front of the
mirror

right and left. I looked ugly.
I threw it on my
brother

it for a long time before
I put it on
and went out, smiling a
“

to my mom.
The next day I wore it to school. At
the morning break, my best
friend,
Steve, looked at me for a long time. The girls
turned away to
whisper. The teachers
looked my way and talked about how foolish I
looked in my new jacket. When it was
time for the whole school to get
together on the playground,

Although they didn

loud,
“

I heard
their talk and even laughter.
And so I
went, in my jacket. So embarrassed, so hurt, I
couldn

do
my lessons the rest of the day. I received Cs on
