hope you will understand that we are not bad kids. What we did was definitely not worth

it. We hope this event will make everyone realize that there is a big drug and alcohol problem in

our community,” one of the senior students

said, “And if you work with

The five left the floor to deafening applause.

The team may not win another game this year. But they've learnt something about personal

Should we allow modern buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city?

In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve

the historic feel of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other

reasons

for example, economic reasons

why they should be preserved. So, let us assume that

historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we

do then if a new building is needed?

In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed,

there

are

many

examples

in

my

own

hometown

of

Tours

where

modern

designs

have

been

placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and

does not dominate(

影响

) its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the

area.

It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt(

破坏

) the area they are in,

but the same can be said of some old buildings too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in

historic

areas.

I

think

this

is

simply

because

people

are

naturally

conservative

and

do

not

like

change.

Although we have to respect people's feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it

is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what

was

there

before,

we

would

all

still

be

living

in

caves.

Thus,

I

would

argue

against

copying

previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might

be the more risky choice.

1

What does the author say about historical buildings in the first paragraph?

A. Some of them are not attractive.

B. Most of them are too expensive to preserve.

C. They

are

more

pleasing

than

modern

buildings.

D. They

have

nothing

to

do

with

the

historic feel of an area.

2

Which of the following is TRUE according to the author?

A. We

should

reproduce

the

same

old

buildings.

B. Buildings

should

not

dominate

their

surroundings.

C. Some old buildings have spoilt the area they are in.

D. No one understands why people

speak against new buildings.

3

By “move things forward” in the last paragraph, the author probably means “_______”.

A. destroy old buildings B. put things in a different place

C. choose new architectural style D. respect people's feelings for historical buildings

4

< p>

What is the main purpose of the passage?

A. To explain why people dislike change.

B. To argue that modern buildings can be built in

historic areas.

C. To warn that we could end up living in caves.

their surroundings.

It took me a moment to realize what had happened. Three days had passed and Rita seemed to

The Maltese Islands are rich in Neolithic (

the Hagar Qim/Mnajdra Complex here on Malta's south coast are perhaps the most well-known.

These piles of stones are some of the earliest known manmade structures in the world. They are

showing their age a bit but what would you expect for buildings that are five and a half thousand

years old. My house was built in the year 2000 and is already in bad condition round the edges.

These temples are older than the pyramids!

In my opinion the temples are best seen after the visitors have left. Come with me for a late

afternoon walk down the hill past Hagar Qim towards the Mnajdra Complex. There are chain link

fences around the temples now but we can ignore those and

try to image why Maltas earliest

people went to the trouble of building these structures on this windy and poor hillside.

“Sometimes I hold the Chinese edition and choose a story at random and try to guess which

book is translated into a Western language, I can at least understand some parts of my stories,

and therefore suffer some doubt about the quality of the translation. But my Chinese edition is

more like an act of faith.”

Born in Argentina in 1978, Schweblin says she is influenced by the literary traditions of the La

Plata area, home to many famous Latin- American novelists.

Birds in the Mouth

tells of a divorced father who worries about his 13-year- old daughter and

her mysterious appetites. It turns out that his daughter eats live birds.

The idea for this story came to Schweblin when she was browsing the Internet, “Click, click,

Taking on the task of producing a short movie might seem like an impossible feat, but if you

can assemble a good team and if you break down each stage of production into small blocks of

tasks, you'll come to realize that producing a small-scale movie isn't too bad. Just follow these

steps and you'll be on your way to Kevin Smith-like fame in no time.

Assemble a production crew. If you run out of friends or people you can get to work for screen

credit, offer people “points”, which is a percentage of the movie profits.

Assemble the props and costumes. Costume shops and local theater groups can definitely help

you here. But you can also borrow from friends and family or check out thrift stores for bargains.

Choose filming locations. Make sure you have permission from the owners of the property you

choose to film on.

Get the film processed. Find the right processor with the help of your director of photography.

You may need to send the film to Los Angeles for this.

Edit the film. You need to find someone who can transfer your film to video and arrange the

completed scenes in the right order. You can likely find one in the same place as your director of

photography,

Obviously, this is just a basic overview

the thing about producing a short independent movie

is that the whole process is unpredictable. You can only set yourself up for the basics, but as long

as you know things will go wrong every day, at least you'll be prepared to deal with the difficulties.
