program, a balloon was
released

into the sky.
She thought she could do
the same with
her Hello Kitty doll.
Lauren spent
about a month building a small silver rocket and a
weather balloon
by herself. She put the
Hello Kitty doll into the rocket and tied it with
the balloon.
After testing wind
direction and temperature, she set the balloon
free. Lauren Rojas
said she wanted to
test the effects of
altitude
(海拔)
on the balloon's
air pressure
and temperature. To record
the journey, she put cameras to the rocket.
After a few minutes, the balloon rose
more than 90,000 feet above the ground.
It was near outer space.
There, the air was so thin that the
balloon burst

balloon was 53

original size before bursting open. Hello Kitty's
rocket fell back

from the
launch site.

Bas Timmer is a Dutch fashion designer.
Shortly after graduating years ago, he
heard some distressing he had been
busy designing warm weather
clothing
for his new brand, a friend's father, who was
homeless, had died of
hypothermia(
体温过低
)just meters away from his
house. Bas decided to use his
design
skills to create Sheltersuit--a waterproof(
防水
jacket that doubles as a
sleeping bag to protect the world's
homeless and refugees, living in the camps,
against the cold weather.
The jacket is made from used sleeping bags, tents,
and other things. To turn it
into a
sleeping bag, the wearer simply
zips(
用拉链拉上
) on a second
piece to the
suit's large
hood
风帽
) helps shield against
bright street lights at night,
while a
built-in scarf adds warmth and protection. When
not in use, the jacket can be
folded up
and put in the backpack.
At the
beginning he had decided to create a small number
of Sheltersuits.
However, the product
was quite a hit. Over the past four years, Timmer
and his
team, which includes both
volunteers and paid workers, have given away 6,000
Sheltersuits to the homeless in the
Netherlands and across Europe.
Earlier
this year, the young designer went on designing a
light weight jacket and
sleeping bag
that is more suited to the warmer temperature.
However, Bas Timmer's waterproof
clothing is not the solution to this serious
social problem. Hopefully,governments
and more volunteers will come together to
find a way to help the people that are
down on their luck.
