Nowadays, the food that you buy comes from many different countries

Have a look in your
fridge, cupboard, and fruit bowl and check the origins(
来源
) of the food

Perhaps there are apples
from California, lamb from New Zealand, or potatoes from Egypt? You will probably be surprised
how_____food
travels
to
get
to
your
plate

This
journey,
from
“field
to
plate”,
is
called“food
miles”

A food mile is the distance that food trav
els from the farmer’s field to the person who buys
the f ood

Nowadays, food often travels thousands of miles to get to the consumer(
消费者
)

Why
is this, and what are the effects(
影响
) of these long distances?

Traditionally, farmers sold their food in the loc
al market so the food didn’t have to travel
very far

The consumers also did not travel very far, because they went to their local market to buy
the
food

This
was
a
good
system
for
farmers
and
consumers

However,
there
were
some
______

For example, consumers could only buy food that farmers produced locally

In addition,
they
could only get
food
that
was
in
season

Now,
because
of
modern
technology,
food
comes
from
all
over
the
world

We
do
not
have
to
wait
for spring or
summer
to
buy

tomatoes

They are______in winter if we want

Some countries have to import(
进口
) most of their food

This is because they have difficult
climates

The
United
Arab
Emirates(UAE),
for
example,
gets
85%
of
its
food from other
countries

______food made in the UAE often uses imported materials

What’s wrong with

“food miles”? Is this not a good way of increasing international trade? I
believe these miles are ______for a number of reasons

First of all, because food travels such long
distances

we need more planes, lorries, and ships to move the food

This means we use more oil
or petrol, so there is more pollution and more global(
全球的
) warming

______, food thattravels a
long
way
is
not
fresh
and
usually
not very tasty

Tomatoes,
for
example,
are
picked
early
and
stored
for
their
long
journey

For
this
reason,
they
are
usually
tasteless
when
they
get
to
the
consumer

Local food has a better taste, a nd it also reduces the amount of global pollution

We
need to buy more local food.

Dario and his mother loved their new apartment. The living room was large enough for their
piano.
That
night,
the
two
of
them
sat
side
by
side
at
the
piano.
They
played
jazz
music
to
celebrate their new home. The loud music filled the room and made them feel very happy.
The next morning, however, their happiness disappeared. Someone had left a note under their door
during
the
night.
One
of
their
neighbor
had
written
to
complain(
抱怨
)
about
the
sound
of
the
piano.
Dario’s
mother
asked
the
building
superintendent(
管理员
)
if
he
knew
anything
about
it.
But
he
said
that
they
were
all
nice
people
and he
couldn’t
imagine
any
of
them
had
done
that.
Later that morning, Dario suggested that they write a letter to their neighbors and apologize for
their playing.

“Maybe we could go and visit everyone in person.” his mother said.

“What if
we invited them to come here for a party instead? Dario asked.

They
both
loved
the
idea.
Over
the
next
few
days,
they
sent
out
invitations
and
prepared
desserts for their guests. They decorated the apartment with streamers(
彩带
) and party lights.

Finally,
the day of the party arrived. Some guests brought presents. Others brought flowers.
Some even brought desserts to share. One woman, Mrs. Gilbert, gave Dario’s mother with a book
of piano music by Chopin.

“I heard you playing the other night,” she said. “The sounds woke me out of bed. I was afraid
that you might play like this every night. So I wrote a short note. I hope you don’t think I disliked
the playing.”

Dario’s mother smiled at Mrs. Gilbert. “I think maybe we should apologize to you.” she sa
id.
“I didn’t realize how late it was when we were playing. Maybe we should play some quieter music
at night.

“You play, you play!” Mrs. Gilbert said. “I like what you play! Just not so loud at night.” She
pointed to the book she had given them. “These songs are not such loud music.”

“These songs are beautiful music.” Dario’s mother said. “We will be happy to play them in the
evening.”

“And we won’t play so loud or late!” Dario said. He was already looking forward to practicing
the new music. More tha
n that, however, he was happy to see the big smile on his mother’s face. It
gave him a feeling of warmth and made him feel that they were home at last.

Inventions named after people
Many new things are invented each year. Interestingly, some inventions are named after the
people who invented them, making the inventions and inventors easier to be remembered.
The bowler hat is named after London hat-makers Thomas and William Bowler. The brothers

Another invention that is named after its inventor is Braille, a writing system used by blind

Sherlock Holmes was one of the most famous detectives in the world. But do you know he
was not a real person? He was created by a writer whose name was Conan Doyle. Conan Doyle
used to be a medical doctor, but he was not successful and few people asked
him for help. He
couldn

t make a living in this way, so he gave it up. He really liked writing, so he began to write
detective stories. One of his university teachers in Edinburgh University was Bell. He was a very
careful man and could tell a stranger correctly at his first sight. Conan Doyle was deeply attracted
by him. Therefore, the character of Sherlock Holmes was just based on Bell. In every Sherlock
Holmes

story,
there
was
an
assistant.
His
name
was
Dr.
Watson.
This
character
was
based
on
Doyle
himself.
Now
if
you

to

more
about
Sherlock
Holmes,
you

more
detailed information through the Internet. If you go to London, don

What
does

getting

mean?

Getting
along

means
you
and
your
teacher have a way that works for
both of
you, and you both are getting what you need from the
relationship. For your teacher, he or she wants to make sure that you always get along with others
in a
polite way
, and you try your best to learn. For you, you want a teacher who answers your
questions and tries to help you learn. You can get along with your teacher without being friends
with him or her, although it

s nice if that happens.

In every school, kids will say some teachers are
too serious
or strict, but don

t judge a teacher
until you are in his or her class and can see for yourself. Most of time, your teacher is
on
your
side
.
And a teacher who

s called strict may be someone who expects to do his or her job well. It

s also
important to remember that making mistakes is part of learning. By
pointing out
your mistakes
and helping you correct them, a teacher is teaching you.

Almost nothing we do in this world is done in
isolation
(

). At work or at play, you’ll find yourself in groups, working with
other people: your team at work, a meeting with fellow workers,
your family, a holiday with friends, a group of students working
together,
a
group
of
neighbors
wanting
to
make
changes.
It
is
now
realized
that
being
able
to
work
successfully
with
other
people is one of the main keys to success, partly because we need to do it so often.
In almost every situation where you’re in a group,
you will need a skilled leader. All groups
need leaders and all successful groups have good leaders. Groups without leaders or with weak
leaders
almost
always

down.

There

Some people are natural leaders. The well-known cook

are born and you can see
them in kitchens.” They’re people who are strong, fair and humourous.

Although a lot of people agree that there are some natural

born leaders, most people now know
that leadership can also be taught. Experienced teachers can train almost anyone how to be a
successful leader. Good leaders don’t make people do things in a controlling way. You can learn
how to join others, encouraging the whole group to work towards a common goal.
Successful leaders also need to be calm and wise. They need to be able to work out good
solutions
and
make
perfect
judgments
under
pressure.
Lastly,
and
probably
most
importantly,
good leaders need to be sensitive, confident and be able to get on well with a variety of people.

Isabel
Allende’s
novels
are
enjoyed
all
over
the
world.
She
is
famous
for
her
creativity
and
imagination.
And
her
own
personal
story is as amazing as any she has ever told in a novel. Born in 1942,
Allende’s
family
moved
often
during
her
childhood.
She
went
to
school in South America, Europe, and Asia. As a young woman, she
became a journalist in Santiago,

got
married
and
had
two
children.
In
1970,
everything
began
to
change.

Leaving home

Isabel Allende’s uncle was a political leader named Salvador Allende. In 1970, her uncle was
elected president of Chile. In 1973, Augusto Pinochet led a
military takeover
(
军事接管
) of the
Chilean government. President Allende was killed during the fighting. When Isabel Allende began
to fear for her life, she and her family decided to move to
Venezuela
(

).

From Newspaper to Novels
It
was
really
a
painful
experience
for
Isabel
Allende
to
flee
her
country.
Without
this
experience, however, Allende says she never would have begun writing novels.
Then she got a
phone
call
from Chile. Her grandfather was
dying.
She knew
she
could
not return home
to
be
with him, but she wanted to respect him
in some way. “I decided to write a letter about all the
things
he
told
us
when
we
were
young,”
Allende
explains.
Later,
he
wrote
a
long
letter
which
became Allende’s first novel,
The House of the Spirits
.

The Writing Life
“I spent ten, twelve hours a day

in a room, writing,” Allende says, “I don’t talk to anybody; I
don’t answer the phone.” When she finishes the first
draft
(
草稿
) of a new novel, Allende mails a
copy to her
toughest critic
(

). “I send it to my mother in Chile. She reads it and
comes here with a red pencil.
We fight for a month at least.
” Allende then goes back to work
until she feels the book is finished. “The storytelling is the fun part,” she says. “The writing can be
a lot of work!”
