Many people have long dreamed of being able to fly around as simply as riding a bicycle. Yet

the

safety

and

strength

of

a

flying

bike

was

always

a

big

problem.

Over

the

past

10

years,

developments in technology have moved the dream of personal flying vehicles closer to reality.

Now, two groups of inventors say such vehicles may be available soon.

The British company Malloy Aeronautics has developed a prototype (

原型

) of its flying bicycle.

Grant Stapleton, marketing sales director of Malloy Aeronautics, says the Hoverbike is able to get

in and out of small spaces very quickly. It can be moved across continents very quickly because it

can be folded and packed, he adds.

Mr. Stapleton says safety was the company's main concern. He says the designers solved the

safety issue by using overlapping rotors (

交叠式旋翼

)to power the vehicle.

The company is testing a full-size prototype of the Hoverbike, which will most likely be used

first by the police and emergency rescue teams.

In New Zealand, the Martin Aircraft Company is also testing a full-size prototype of its personal

flying device, called the Jetpack. It can fly for more than 30 minutes, up to 1,000 meters high and

reach a speed of 74 kilometers per hour.

Peter Coker is the CEO of Martin Aircraft Company. He said the Jetpack “is built around safety

from the start. In his words, reliability is the most important element of it. We have safety built

into the actual structure itself, very similar to a Formula O

ne racing car.”

The Jetpack uses a gasoline-powered engine that produces two powerful jet streams. Mr. Coker

says it also has a parachute (

降落伞

) that can be used should there be an emergency. “

It starts to

work at very low altitude and actually saves bo

th the aircraft and the pilot,” he adds. Mr. Coker

says the Jetpack will be ready for sale soon.

quickly

B. can

fly

for

over

30

minutes,

up

to

C. has been used by the police and emergency rescue teams

D. can be transported quickly

after being folded and packed

2

The writer uses the example of For One racing car to show that .

A. the Jetpack is very safe and reliable

B. the engine of the Jetpack is powerful

C. the actual structure of the Jetpack is unique

D. the Jetpack can reach a great speed and

height

3

The underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refers

to.

A. the jet stream

B. the engine

C. the Jetpack

D. the parachute

4

What is the authors main purpose of writing the passage?

A. To

describe

the

problems

of

inventing

flying

vehicles.

B. To

introduce

the

latest

development of flying vehicles.

C. To

show

the

differences

Bamboo is one of the world's most useful plants. For thousands of years, bamboo has been

used in many different ways-from food to medicine to clothing and, in small ways, as a building

material.

However, bamboo is not often used as a building material in the developed world. A professor

at

the

University

of

Pittsburgh

in

Pennsylvania

is

trying

to

change

that.

The

professor

and

his

students are testing the strength of are testing how much pressure or weight it can

take before breaking.

Kent Harries is a professor at the University of Pittsburgh. Harries says that testing methods for

bamboo need to be the same for all. They need to be standardized. Standardizing test methods

for bamboo will help to bring the plant into common use. It will also give engineers and builders

around the world a dependable standard.

Harries says that bamboo is strong in nature. The strength of at least three species of bamboo

is

similar

to

s

its

strength,

bamboo

has

other

features

that

make

it

very

useful

in

building. He says it is resilient(

有弹力的

), meaning it keeps its shape and strength even under

pressure.

Bamboo also grows quickly. Bamboo that is suitable for construction needs much less resources

than

wood.

The

harvest

cycle

of

bamboo

is

about

3

years.

Softwoods

such

as

cedar,

pine

and

spruce have a harvest cycle of about 10 years. And hardwoods that come from flowering plants

such as oak and walnut need more than 30 years.

Bamboo is widely used as food for panda bears. It is also used for flooring and window covers.

However, for building, bamboo is not used much outside its native growing area. This is mostly

because

of

its

round

shape.

But

there

are

other

reasons

too.

People

think

--

or

have

the

mentality--that bamboo is a low quality building material.

1

What is the author mainly talking about in the passage?

A. Make bamboo a common building material.

B. Take advantage of bamboo in our everyday.

C. Consider bamboo to be a common plant.

D. Use bamboo to replace building materials.

2

What is the purpose of what Kent Harries and his students did?

A. To prove what is the most useful plant.

B. To introduce bamboo to the developed world.

C. To give engineers and builders some advice.

D. To make sure of the strength of bamboo.

3

What does Harries think of bamboo in the passage?

A. Harries sees bamboo as a great building material.

B. Harries thinks bamboo is as strong as

steel.

C. Harries

sees

bamboo

as

the

most

Plant.

D. Harries

thinks

bamboo

has the

4

What can be inferred from the passage?

A. Bamboo

is

an

environmentally

friendly

building

material.

B. Bamboo

material

will

go

to

the market in the soon future.

C. Hardwoods are much more popular than softwoods.

D. Bamboo grows not only faster but

takes up less space.

A bite from a tsetse fly

(

采采蝇

)

is an extremely unpleasant experience. It is not like a mosquito,

which can put its thin mouthpart directly into your blood, often without you noticing. In contrast,

the tsetse fly's mouth has tiny saws on it that saw into your skin on its way to suck out your blood.

To make matters worse, several species of tsetse fly can transmit diseases. One of the most

dangerous is a parasite that causes

sleeping sickness

, or

human African trypanosomiasis

to give it its official name. Without treatment, an infection is usually fatal.

Like

so

many

tropical

diseases,

sleeping

sickness

has

often

been

neglected

by

medical

researchers. However, researchers have long endeavored to understand how it avoids our bodies'

defence

mechanisms.

Some

of

their

insights

could

now

help

us

eliminate

sleeping

sickness

altogether.

There are two closely-related single-celled parasites that cause this deathly sleep: Trypanosoma

brucei rhodesiense and T. b. gambiense. The latter is far more common: it is responsible for up to

95%

of

cases,

mostly

in

western

Africa.

It

takes

several

years

to

kill

a

person,

while

T.

brucei

rhodesiense can cause death within months. There are still other forms that infect livestock.

After the initial bite, sleeping sickness symptoms often start with a fever, headaches and aching

muscles. As the illness goes on, those infected become increasingly tired, which is where it gets

its name. Personality changes, severe confusion and poor coordination can also happen.

While

medication

does

help,

some

treatments

are

toxic

and

can

themselves

be

deadly,

especially if they are given after the disease has reached the brain.

It is worth noting that sleeping sickness is no longer as deadly as it once was. In the early 20th

Century several hundred thousand people were infected each year. By the 1960s the disease was

considered

under

control

and

had

reached

very

low

numbers,

making

its

spread

more

difficult. But in the 1970s there was another major epidemic, which took 20 years to control.

Since then, better screening programmes and earlier interventions have reduced the number

of cases dramatically. In 2009 there were fewer than 10,000 cases for the first time since records

began, and in 2015 this figure dropped to fewer than 3,000, according to the latest figures from

the

World

Health

Organisation.

The

WHO

hopes

the

disease

will

be

completely

eliminated

by

2020.

While this decline looks positive, there may be many more cases that go unreported in rural

Africa. To eliminate the disease completely, infections have to be closely monitored.

More

problematically,

a

series

of

new

studies

have

shown

that

the

parasite

is

more

complicated than previously believed.

Sleeping

sickness

has

always

been

considered

——

and

diagnosed

——

as

a

blood

disease,

because T. brucei parasites can readily be detected in the blood of its victims.

A Song of Ice and Fire

is a seven-part series of fantasy written for adults. George R. R. Martin

writes each chapter from the perspective of a specific character, providing a limited point of view

for each section. The reader is able to understand the inner workings of the individual, but the

reader is barred from a whole understanding of the text. The world he has created has magic, but

there is much more than that. While magic exists, it exists on the edge, and the inner unrest of

the characters is much more important.

both good and bad happen to both the people of high moral standard and the corrupt. He has

made it clear that any character can die at any point, which has led to a lot of heartbreak from

series, to answer the questions Martin and the television show have not yet addressed. Martin,

however, has no plans to rush. He has made it clear that he will continue to write the books while

working on the television show and writing other novels.

But how will the story continue? What is going to happen in Westeros, and more importantly:

when are we going to find out? Martinis skill as a writer has kept readers and viewers spellbound.

Many hope he will finish the next book before the next season of the show begins, but no one

knows with Martin. He always keeps his readers guessing.
