When two US
astronauts went on a space walk earlier this
month, they dropped some bolts(
螺钉
)
。
Scientists on the
earth
started to worry at once. Why? In
space, junk can kill . Things move at very high
speed in space. If they hit one another, it
can be dangerous. A tiny piece of dried
paint(
颜料
) from a satellite
once made a hole in a spacecraft window.
So far, scientists have
found over 10,000 man-made pieces flying around in
space. Only 6-7 percent of them are satellites.
The rest is junk like bolts. Where is
the junk from? Some is from
rockets(
火箭
) .In
1996
,
a rocket broke into
about 300,000
small pieces. Each piece
was at least 4mm big.
Astronauts also lose small things while
working in space. In 1965, during the first
American space walk, astronaut Edward
White lost a glove. For a month, the
glove stayed in space, traveling at a speed of
28,000 kilometers per hour. It became
the most dangerous piece of clothing
for the earth in history before it flew away.
(
) American astronauts will go on a
space walk next month.
(
)57. Scientists
worry about junk in space because it is dangerous
when it
moves fast.
(
)58. Scientists have found 10,000
satellites in space. .
(
)59. All of the
junk comes from satellites.
