Throughout the colonial period there was a remarkable shortage of women, which varied with the

regions and was always greatest in the frontier areas. This shortage enhanced women's status and position

and allowed them to pursue different careers. The puritans regarded idleness as a sin, and believed that life

in an underdevelopment country made it necessary that each member of the community performed an

economic function. Thus work for women was not only approved but also was regarded as a civic duty.

The vast majority of women worked within their homes, where their labor produced most articles

needed for the family. The entire colonial production of cloth and clothing and partly that of shoes was in

the hands of women. In addition to these occupations, women were found in many different kinds of

employment. They were butchers, silversmiths and gunsmiths. They ran mills, plantations, shipyards, and

every kind of shop. They were gatekeepers, jail keepers, journalists, printers, nurses, and teachers.

Halloween (October 31) is a holiday widely celebrated with different names in many countries.

Although it originated as a religious holiday, it has lost its religious connections in the United States. It is

now celebrated largely as a children's day, and many American children look forward to it for days and

weeks beforehand.

The orange pumpkin is harvested at this time of year and is hollowed out, a funny face cut into it, and

a candle placed inside as decorations in the window. City folks, nowadays, sometimes use paper pumpkins

for

decorations.

corn on the window panes, and in other ways making minor disturbances. More recently, children come

to the door to have friends and neighbors admire their costumes and guess who they are behind the false

faces and receive treats of candy, fruit or cookies. They say,

on you if you do not give me a treat.

This practice has even more recently developed into a significant international activity. Instead of or

along with candy, the children collect money for UNICEF (United Nations International Children's

Emergency Fund). This special collection of money by children for needy children throughout the world

is known as

Human needs seem endless. When a hungry man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat,

when a manager gets a new sports car, a big house and pleasure boats dance into view.

The many needs of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels. When there is money

enough to satisfy one level of needs, another level appears.

The first and most basic level of needs involves food. Once this level is satisfied, the second level of

needs, clothing and some sort of shelter, appears. By the end of World War II, these needs were satisfied

for a great majority of Americans. Then a third level appeared. It included such items as automobiles and

new houses.

By 1957 or 1958 this third level of needs was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s, a fourth

level of needs appeared: the

is,

the

feeding,

comfort,

safety,

transportation,

this

items.

them

are

trips,

the

and

dental

care,

and

recreation.

Also

included here are fancy goods and the latest styles in clothing.

On the fourth level, a lot of money is spent on services, while on the first three levels more is spent

on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of needs as their income increases, or will they

continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level?

A

fifth

disease,

ignorance,

crime, and prejudice. After filling our stomachs, our clothes closets, our garages, our teeth, and our minds,

we now may seek to ensure the health, safety, and leisure to enjoy more fully the good things on the first

four levels.

According to the passage, man will begin to think about such needs as housing and clothing only

Though some people have suggested that women should return to housework in order to leave

more jobs for men, the idea has been rejected by both women and men in public opinion polls. Lately

some union officials have suggested that too many women are employed in type of work more suitable

for men and that women should step aside to make way for unemployed young men. They argue that

women - especially women in their childbearing years actually delay economic development and result in

lower productivity, poor quality and inefficiency.

To

solve

the

problem,

they

have

suggested

that

the

working

women

stay

at

home

their

husbands

or

brothers

were

wages.

They

argue

that

under

these

circumstances,

families

would retain their same level of income, and women could run the house and raise children much better.

The suggestion has been rejected by 9 out of 10 people polled. A hundred persons in a big city were

questioned last summer. Out of 50 women, 46 said they were unwilling to leave their jobs, no matter what

the situation was. The other 4 said they would like to return home if their jobs could be taken by their

sons or daughters. Of 50 men polled, only 6 said they would like to see their wives give up their jobs, if it

meant higher wages for themselves.

Some

other

people

have

suggested

another

way

theory

The

theory

suggests that a woman worker take leave from her job when she is seven months pregnant and stay off

the job until her baby reaches the age of 3. It suggests that women on leave receive75 percent of their

normal salary and be allowed to return to work after the 3-year period. This will benefit children, women,

their families and the society. Some of those polled, both women and men, felt the idea is a good one. It

definitely seems to be more acceptable than the suggestion that women return to home forever.

Some union officials have suggested that women should return home because ______.

Many

studies

have

identified

a

strong

link

between

suicide

and

diagnosable

mental

illness,

especially depression. So, because women suffer from depression at a much higher rate than men, they

would seem to be at higher risk for suicide. Yet, women actually commit suicide about one-fourth as often

as men.

George E. Murphy, professor of psychiatry at Washington university school of Medicine in St. Louis,

says that females may be protected because of the way they think about problems and interact with others.

They are much more likely to tell a physician how they feel and cooperate in the prescribed treatment. As

a result, women get better treatment for their depression.

That treatment may help protect them from suicide, but Murphy

suggests there is more to it. The

approach to problem- solving is what often lands a woman in a psychiatrist's office in the first place, and

that approach may be keeping female suicide rates lower.

Murphy believes women are less inclined to commit suicide because their thinking is more inclusive.

While a man might tend to throw aside seemingly peripheral

(非本质的,边缘的)

issues to get to the

core of a problem, a woman might take more things into account. She may continue to seek input and

process problems long after the point where men decide on a course of action.

her feelings, but also the feelings of others - her family, the children, even acquaintances - and how these

people will be affected by a decision like suicide. A man is much less likely to take those things into

The purpose of this part of the book is to help you become more efficient in reading by speeding

up the process generally. Most people can learn to cover material much faster than they do now while

maintaining a high level of comprehension.

Improvement in

reading efficiency

has several major benefits. We need reading skills to benefit from

the wealth of information that is now available in printed form. Most people get the rough outlines of

their daily news from television and radio. However, the printed word still provides the in-depth coverage

of topics that really produces well- informed people. Reading is also a great source of entertainment for

many people. For students, it is the primary method of studying.

A nineteenth- century French dramatist remarked that the only difference between animals and

human

beings

is

that

people

drink

when

they

are

not

thirsty

and

make

love

in

any

season.

The

sociologist's definition of the difference is more scientific: only human beings have the ability for creating

and transmitting culture. More than any other species, human animals are able to surpass their biological

limitations by sharing ideas and passing on what they learn to future generations.

All animals, including human beings, have certain problems in common. In order to survive as

species, they must find a home, get food and provide for their young. Animals are guided by instincts that

enable them to cope with these problems of existence. Their responses to their environment is a fixed

predictable manner: beavers build dams as homes, lions hunt for antelopes for food, and birds build nests

to protect their young. Should these solutions turn out to be inadequate, animals for the most part will

still go on making the same responses to the same problems. It is true that much of the behavior of

higher animals is learned through direct experience. As everyone knows, dogs can be taught to overcome

their instinctive dislike of cats, and parrots often learn new calls. In some cases animals have also been

known to teach their offspring what they themselves have learned. Nevertheless, human beings are unique

in their far greater ability to learn from experiences, to create new solutions to old problems, and most

important, to use language to transmit what they have learned to future generations. While animal

societies must rely on biologically inherited methods of dealing with their environment, human societies

have the far greater advantage of a socially inherited culture.

Sporting activities are essentially modified forms of hunting behavior. Viewed biologically, the

modern

footballer

is

in

reality

a

member

of

a

hunting

group.

His

killing

weapon

has

turned

into

a

harmless football and his prey into a goalmouth. If his aim is accurate and he scores a goal, he enjoys the

hunter's triumph of killing his prey.

To understand how this transformation has taken place we must briefly look at our forefathers. They

spent over a million years evolving as cooperative hunters. Their very survival depended on success in the

hunting field. Under this pressure their whole way of life, even their bodies, became greatly changed. They

became

chasers,

runners,

jumpers,

aimers,

throwers

and

prey-killers.

They

cooperated

as

skillful

Then

about

ten

thousand

years

ago,

after

this

immensely

long

period

of

hunting

their

food,

they

became farmers. Their improved intelligence, so vital to their old hunting life, was put to a new use--that

of controlling and domesticating their prey. The hunt became suddenly out of date. The food was there

on the farms, awaiting their needs. The risks and uncertainties of the hunt were no longer essential for

survival.

The skills and thirst for hunting remained, however, and demanded new outlets. Hunting for sport

replaced hunting for necessity. This new activity involved all the original hunting sequences but the aim of

the operation was no longer to avoid starvation. Instead, the sportsmen set off to test their skill against

prey that were no longer essential to their survival. To be sure, the kill may have been eaten but there were

other much simpler ways of obtaining a meaty meal.

Many teachers believe that the responsibility for learning lies with students. If a long reading

assignment is given, instructors expect students to be familiar with the information in the reading even if

they do not discuss it in class or give an examination. (Courses are not designed merely for students to

pass exams.) The ideal student is considered to be one who is encouraged to learn for the purpose of

learning, not the one interested only in getting high grades. Some students may be frustrated with teachers

who do not believe it is necessary to grade every assignment. Sometimes homework is returned with short

written comments but without a grade. Even if a grade is not given, students should learn the material

assigned.

When research assigned, the professor expects students to begin and to complete the assignment

with minimum instruction. It is the student's responsibility to find books and articles in the library.

Professors do not have the time to explain how a university library works; they expect students, especially

graduate students, to be able to find what they need in the library.

Professors will help students who need it, but prefer that their students not depend on them too

much. This is different from teacher-student relationships in other countries. In the United States,

professors have other duties in addition to teaching. Often they do some administrative work within their

departments. In addition, they may be required to write articles and books. Therefore, the time that a

professor can spend with a student outside of class is limited. If a student has problems with classroom

work, the student should either ask a professor for help during office hours or make an appointment.

Many American women are earning money outside their homes today. Among women who are

eighteen to sixty- four years old, fifty percent have jobs.

In general, working women have had more education than those staying at home. Of those who

work, thirty-two percent have attended college, compared with twenty percent of those who do not have

jobs.

Among women with jobs, eight of ten drive a car to work, and eight percent took a vacation away

from home during the past year. Much of their traveling was by air.

These figures come from a report, which was written for advertisers, the report shows a new

picture of women today. For instance, it tells advertisers that fifty-one percent of all American women

have traveled by air - along with fifty-nine percent of all American men.

The lesson for American business is that many women now have other interests besides their

homes. They like advertisements, which show women in office, planes, and cars.
