When Charles Kao first talked about his idea of fiber-optic
(光纤)
communication more than
40 years ago, some scientists laughed at him. Today, the technology has made modern telephones
and
the
Internet
possible.
People
can
exchange
text,
music,
and
photos
around
the
world
within
seconds
thanks
to
this
technology.
For
his
important
contribution
(贡献)
,
the
Nobel
Prize
organization gave Gao the 2009 Nobel Prize in physics.
Kao was born in Shanghai, China, in 1933. He grew up and went to school in Hong Kong. He
worked as an engineer while studying at the University of London. He received his doctor

s degree
in 1965.
When he began his studies on fiber optics in the 1960s, the threads
(线)
of glass that carried
sound and data
(数据)
as light could only transmit

传递)

light for a short distance (
距离
) before
the light died out

消失)
. But in 1966, by using a new kind of fiber optics, he was able to send light
for more than 100 kilometers. His work proved that fiber-optic communication was possible.
Speaking about his pressure, Professor Kao said in 2006,

At that time, I was always late for
dinner. I told my annoyed wife that this could be a world-changing project. She didn

t believe me at
all.

Today the fibers are used throughout the world in computer cables and other cables. The light
that flows through them sends text, music, pictures, and videos globally. If we put together all the
fibers in the world, we would get a single thread over 1 billion kilometers long. That is enough to
go around the globe more than 25,000 times.

Kao was revolutionary,

said Sir Peter Knight of Imperial College London(
英国伦敦帝国学

). He said Kao

s work shows how important science is for improving our everyday lives.
(

) 34. Why was Charles Kao awarded the Nobel Prize in physics?
A.

He has made modern telephones and the Internet possible.
B.

He was an inventor.
C.

He made photos within seconds.
D.

He improved fiber-optics.
(

) 35. When he started his studies on fiber optics in the 1960s, ______.
A.

the threads of glass only carried sound for a short distance.
B.

the threads of glass could transmit light for a short distance.
C.

sound could transmit for a short distance.
D.

sound and data could only transmit light for a short distance.

Are you a cotton wool kid?

Be

shouts
mum
to
her
son,
as
he
climbs
up
to
the

point
of
the
climbing
frame.

he

back
without

in
the

There

the

and
the
equipment
has
been
designed to the highest safety standards.

How will he learn to deal with danger if you wrap(
包裹
) him in cotton wool all the time?
asks granny.
It

s a modern problem--- in the past, children had to grow up much earlier, and often faced
danger
at
home
and
at
work.
In
England,
children
were
made
to
climb
chimneys
to
clean
them,
work in coal mines

煤矿)
, textile mills

纺织厂)

and many other dangerous places. They walked
to school alone, played outside for hours by themselves, and nobody ever worried.
But modern parents see danger in everything, and are often accused of
(被指责)
turning their
children into

cotton wool

kids--- so over- protected that children never get the chance to explore
or learn through play and adventure.
Child
psychologists
say
that
modern
children
are
becoming
too
soft,
and
that
parents
must
give young people freedom to play. They must learn to solve their own problems, and see danger
for themselves. So, if you think you

re in danger of becoming a

cotton wool kid,

ask your parents
for a little more independence
(独立)
. When you

ve proved you can be responsible(
负责任的
),
maybe they

ll

unwrap

you for the real world!
(

) 37. Which of the following in NOT true about the family in the past according to the passage?

A.

Children grew up earlier.
B.

Children often faced danger at home and at work.
C.

Children walked to school alone.
D.

Children played outside for hours by themselves, which made their parents worried.
(

) 38. Why are modern parents accused of turning their children into

cotton-wool kids?

A.

Because they wrap their children in cotton wool.
B.

Because they see danger in everything.
C.

Because they over-protect their children.
D.

Because they do nothing for their children.
