three very pleasant
weeks in the woods
there.
Hen he had to go back home, he
drove to the station with his luggage. There he
asked a porter to put into
the train.
Then he got into the smoking car and sat down in
one of the comfortable seats there. The car
was empty when he got in , but a few
minutes later, another man got in and sat down on
the seats
opposite his. Mark twain
looked sat the man and thought that this man

and they begin to

then they talked about Maine. The stranger said,
―We have some
beautiful woods in Maine.
It would be a pity to come to Marine without
spending some time there. I
suppose you
have been in our woods, haven’t you?‖ ―yes, I
have,‖ answer Mark Twain. ―I’ve just spent
three weeks there and I had a very good
time, too. And let me tell you something.

allowed in Maine in this season, I’ve

luggage in this train.
I like to eat
fish, so I packed it in ice to take it home with
me. May I ask who you are, sir?‖
The stranger looked at Mark
Twai
n for several seconds and then
answered, ―I’m a police officer. My job is
to catch people who hunt and fish
during the wrong seasons. And who you are?‖ Mark

Alfred and Mary Walker and their son,

Kong on Holiday.
They will send
postcards home. Now read what they are writing.
Dear Richard,
We arrived in
Hong Kong three days ago. We are having a
wonderful time, but every day is very busy.
We get up early and go to bed late.
It’s rather tiring.
Yesterday we took a bus to the Park. It
was a very clear day. From the top, we saw the
whole of Hong
Kong. We took lots of
photos. Some of them will be really good. I will
buy a video camera for you because
I
know you want one. I'll get it tomorrow because we
are going shopping.
Your brother,
Alfred
Dear Mum and Dad.
We are having a lovely time in Hong
Kong. Two days ago, we went to a place called
Ocean Park. We
saw lots of sharks and
dolphins there. Robert enjoyed it very much. Today
we are going to Lantau Island.
We will
see the huge statue of Buddha there. Tomorrow we
are going shopping on Hong Kong Island.
Hong Kong is very different to our
hometown in England. The streets are more crowded
and there is
more traffic on the roads.
It is noisier than at home as well, and everything
is more expensive he
re!
See
you soon.
Lots of love,
Mary
Hi Dan!
Hong Kong is a great
city! There is so much to see and do here. We went
to a great place called Ocean
Park. I
saw lots of tropical fish and some sharks. I also
went on a roller-coaster and a cable car.
I loved the roller-coaster and I went
on it four times! Mum and Dad thought I was lost,
but then they saw
me at the top of the
roller-coaster.
Tomorrow will be a
shopping day, the worst part of the holiday!
See you soon!

It's not
easy being a teenager

nor
is it easy being the parent of a teenager. If your

practical approach to giving your child the
space he needs to grow while gently
making him know that you'll be still there for him

Offer

If your child is unwilling to discuss a particular

Try to open up the lines of

Malls are
popular places for Americans to go. Some people
spend so much time at malls that they are
called mall rats.
People
like malls for many reasons. They don't feel any
danger around them because malls have police
stations or private security guards.
Parking is usually free, and the weather inside is
always fine. The
newest malls have
beautiful rest area with waterfalls and large
green trees.
The largest mall in the
United States is the Mall of America in Minnesota.
It covers 4.2 million square feet.
It

About 750,000 people shop every
week.
The first indoor mall in the

Minnesota. People loved doing all
their

over the country. Now, malls are like town centers
where people come to do many things.
They shop, of course. They also eat in food houses
that have
food from all over the world.
They see movies at theatres. Some people even get
their daily exercise by
doing the new
sport mall walking. Others go to malls to meet
friends. In some malls, people can see a
doctor or a dentist and even attend
church. In other words, people can do just
everything in malls. Now

a new

Maybe it is because
humans an chimpanzees share an ancestor about

People and

a scientist in
Germany.
Warneken and his partners
worked on adult chimpanzees that live on an island
in the Afican country of
Uganda. They
also worked with 18-month-old children in Germany.
The researchers performed three
experiments on the adult chimpanzees

a person

it. A chimpanzee was in

Thirty-six

Even though the animals hadn’t met the person

they usually took the

In a similar

Researchers did other experiments on
chimpanzees and babies. No rewards were offered in
either
experiment. And
still
,
both the chimpanzees

Still
,
the new study
is different from earlier findings.
Researchers have found that chimpanzees don’t give
rewards of food to

them nothing to be generous.

Richard is an exchange student from
the USA. He is teaching his friends at Rose Garden
School how to
play Softball. He is
explaining the rules.
Richard: First,
we need a bat, a ball and some bases.
Ben: What are bases?
Richard: They are flat squares that
show you where to run. After you hit the ball,
you
have to run around
the
bases.
If you stand on a base, you are
safe. If you are running to a base, and the other
team touches the base
with the ball,
then you are out.
Jennifer: Oh, I see.
How would I hit the ball?
Richard: Have
you seen baseball on television?
Jennifer: I have.
Richard:
Well, Softball is like baseball, only the ball is
bigger and softer too.
Jennifer: Do you
like volleyball? I love it.
Richard: I
like to play beach volleyball. It's different from
volleyball.
Ben: How?
Richard: In beach volleyball, you only
have two people on each team and the court is
smaller.
Jennifer: Do you play on the
beach?
Richard: Yes. It’s good because
if you dive for the ball, you don’t hurt
yourself.
Ben: Do you play
football at your school?
Richard: Which
kind of football?
Jennifer: I don't
understand there more than one kind? I thought
everyone play the same kind of football.
Richard: No. In the USA, we have
football and soccer. So ccer is a game that is
played around the world.
In other
countries, soccer is called football. In the USA,
we also play a different game called football.
In this game, you throw the ball and
you have to wear a helmet to play.
Jennifer: Well, I want to play
softball.
71. The rules for playing
softball are nearly the same as those for playing
baseball.
72. In a softball game, if
your team is running to a base and the other team
touches the base with the ball,
you are
safe.
73. A baseball is smaller and
harder than a softball.
74. Richard is

In
the 1500s, South American fishermen said that the
sea became warmer every few years. They gave
this special event a Spanish name 'El
Nino', meaning 'the baby'. It is called 'the baby'
because it arrives
around Christmas.
El Nino is a huge area of warm water in
the middle of cold water in the Pacific Ocean. It
happens every
two to seven years. It
moves around the ocean and becomes bigger and
smaller at different times. This
warm
water affects the weather. It is always raining
over El Nino. El Nino contains a lot of energy.
Scientists think this energy is formed
when wind comes from the northern half of the
world. The winds
blow across warm sea
water in the south. When the strong wind hits the
warm water, violent weather
happens.
Scientists think that El Nino existed for many
thousands of years.
El Nino affects
every person in the world because it affects the
entire world'
s
weather. It
can bring the
rain that farmers need.
It can bring storms that destroy homes. It can
mean that fishermen cannot catch
fish,
and it can bring floods. There is nothing we can
do about El Nino. It is an event of nature. We can
help the world'
s
weather by trying to stop the greenhouse effect
and air pollution. The most important job
for scientists is to learn how to
predict when El Nino is going to bring dangerous
weather. Then, people
can try to
prepare for storms, floods and droughts. New
technology like satellite pictures and temperature
measuring equipment can help. Still, it
is very hard to say when or where El Nino will
cause damage.

Can plants eat people? Probably not,
but there are many plants that eat meat. Some of
them are big. And
they can eat small
animals. One famous meat-eating plant is the Venus
flytrap.
The Venus flytrap is a very
strange plant. It grows in dry parts of the United
States. Its leaves are like the
pages
of a book. They can open and close very quickly.
Inside the leaves, there are three small hairs. If
a
fly touches one of the hair, the leaf
presses the fly until it is dead. Then, the plant
covers the fly. Slowly,
the plant eats
the fly.
Why do plants do it? Most
plants get what they need from the sun, the air,
and the ground. In some
places, the
ground is very poor. It doesn’t have all these
important
things, especially
nitrogen(
氮
). Animal
meat has a lot of nitrogen, so some
plants eat meat to get what they need. Let’s hope
that some of the
bigger plants don’t
get the same idea!
