Anyone can try to lead a group, but
not every individual is cut out for leadership.
The better
leaders possess a few
qualities that can mean the difference between the
success and failure of
the group. These
are the qualities the leader of higher rank will
look for when choosing a leader
for
a
group,
or
when
evaluating
the
performance
of
a
leader.
They're
also
the
qualities
team
members want in a group leader, and
appreciate when they find them.
Take Responsibility
Group leaders might share tasks
around a group as necessary, but eventually a
group leader
needs to be able to accept
that responsibility lies on his shoulders. That
means that if things go
wrong in a
group project, he's the one who must accept the
consequences and work out what
mistakes
are made. The group leader won't always have the
power to control everything group
members do, but he should be ready to
admit any mistakes the group has made as a result
of his
leadership
Concern for Members
The
group
leader
has
a
commitment
to
the
task
or
project
at
hand,
but
perhaps
more
importantly, he has a real concern for
each and every person who is part of his group.
This means
getting to know the
strengths, weaknesses and goals of team members,
as well as making time to
build the
group through collective activities. The group
leader should make sure that everyone is
included, even if an individual is new
to a group.
Good
Listener
The group
leader needs to be able to listen to the
suggestions, complaints and ideas of group
members. Not only will this allow
complaints to be addressed and potentially
suitable ideas to be
put
into
practice,
but
a
leader
who
listens
will
also
encourage
group
members
to
share
their
concerns and thoughts, creating an
atmosphere of free speech and
productivity.

No

it

been read
aloud by
someone,
teacher or student. Better still,
perhaps, is the practice of reading it twice, once
at the beginning
of the discussion and
once at the end, so the sound of the poem is the
last thing one hears of it.
All discussions of poetry are, in fact,
preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading
of the
poem is, finally, the most
telling 'interpretation' of it, suggesting tone,
rhythm, and meaning all at
once.
Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own
voice, on records or on film, is obviously a
special reward. But even those aids to
teaching cannot replace the student and teacher
reading it
or, best of all, reciting
it.
I have come to
think, in fact, that time spent reading a poem
aloud is much more important
than
have students love poetry. Poetry is
others
place in the teaching
of language and literature more central than it
presently occupies.
I am
not saying that every English teacher must teach
poetry. Those who don't like it should
not be forced to put that dislike on
anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must
keep in
mind a few things about its
essential nature, about its sound as well as its
sense, and they must
make room in the
classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking
about it.

When
my
sister
Mertie
told
me
she
had
put
out
tomato
plants
last
summer,
I
was
quite
impressed.
Since she was a garden-beginner, Mertie researched
exactly how far apart to space her tomato
plants; what kind of fertilizer to use;
how to keep away the bugs, etc. Once they were
planted,
she took care of them daily,
anxiously awaiting the juicy tomatoes to appear.
But, day after day,
her plants were
tomato-less while all of her neighbors who had
also put out tomato plants were
already
enjoying the fruit of their labor.
Frustrated,
Mertie
gave
in
and
went
to
the
market
to
search
fresh
tomatoes.
While
paying,
Mertie told the
farmer her troubles. The farmer paused to think
for a moment and then asked,
95-day growing period
whereas regular tomato plants produce fruit in as
few as 70 d
ays…you just
have
to wait a little longer for the Big
Boys.
With that new
knowledge, Mertie went home with excitement,
knowing they would be worth
the
wait.
Thinking about my
sister's gardening experience, I had to smile. She
just didn't know that Big
Boy tomatoes
took longer--neither did I
—
but once she discovered that information, she was
no
longer
discouraged
and
upset
about
the
lack
of
tomatoes
on
her
plants.
Instead,
she
was
encouraged and excited to see them a
few weeks later.
It
makes me wonder how many of us have
realize that they are of the
process. Instead of waiting with
excitement, we give up on our dreams and figure we
must have
done
something
wrong
to
stop
them
from
coming

Frustrated,
we
see
other
people's
dreams coming true,
and we wonder why ours haven't yet been
achieved.

What is not mentioned in the
passage when growing tomato plants?
A. Using suitable
fertilizer.
B. Keeping them well apart.
C. Watering them regularly.
D. Controlling pests on them.

Why
did Mertie's tomato plants fail to produce at the

A. Because

B. Because
she
grew
the
wrong
kind
of

C.
Because
she
didn't

D. Because

Along the
