Task 1

Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 questions or unfinished

statements. For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D.

Many jobs have been lost and they may not be coming back. Some occupations had

already been declining for years due to advances in technology and changes in the global

economy. The following is a list of careers that are disappearing.

Stage Performers

The five-year decline for this career was a surprising 61%. Stage performances have

fallen out of fashion and have been almost entirely replaced with movies and home

After losing almost 57000 jobs between 2004 and 2009, a further 30% decline in this

increasing correspondence via e-mail and fax, this job is quickly becoming unnecessary.

Office Support Workers

About 300000 office support jobs disappeared between 2004 and 2009. Secretaries and

file clerks are no longer in demand as companies cut costs. Moreover, technologies like

voicemail and easy-to-use word processors have enabled professionals to do their own

office work.

Photo Processors

With the rise of digital photography and automatic printing, positions for manual photo

printers are rapidly disappearing. The occupation has been steadily losing jobs in the last

five years and there might be a 24% decline by 2018.

Radio Operators

of 43%.

Task 1

Marketing by emailing is on the increase. Compared to other media, email messages are

extremely cheap to send. With TV, you are spending on ad agencies and cable channels.

Keep in mind that the skills needed for home employment are similar to those needed

for working in an office. You'll also need a home office with a high speed internet

Running your small business requires good staff. Once you find them, you don't want to

let them go elsewhere.

During an employee's time with a company, there are a number of forces that influence

his

or her behavior. I like to refer to them as

employee towards the door, or pulling them deeper into your organization.

Suppose that you've made a good hire and you want to keep the employees, the trick is

to recognize individual needs of employees and satisfy those needs, within reason, in order

to keep pulling them away from the door. Even if you can't pull them away from the door, at

least don't do things to push them out the door.

Recognize that some employees will lose interest and need something fresh to keep

their interest. If you can't continually provide challenges, opportunities for promotion and

other interesting and rewarding opportunities, then you'll have some employees leave

through no fault of your own.

The important thing is to identify your key employees and make certain they are being

From: Linda Smith

To: Clarice Ryan

Subject: Report on Employees' Use of Time

Clarice, I agree that waste of work time is a serious issue. The Human Resources

Department recently surveyed the employees. They are wasting nearly two hours per day.

Here are my ideas to reduce this waste. First we need to agree on what are the most

important behaviors to stop. For example, look at activity No. 1 in the table below. Many

people are doing this; however, it is the most difficult to stop. I recommend that we focus

on activities No. 2, 4, and 5.

Making phone calls shows the largest difference between men and women. Women do

this much more than men. We should ask all employees to limit these calls. They should

return non-urgent messages at their lunch break.

For No. 4, we should focus on the younger age group. We will tell them that we are

going to check their work accounts for personal messages. For No. 5, we can ask managers

to watch this more carefully. Perhaps activity No. 3 should continue. This allows employees

to know each other and it can increase their motivation. The managers will know if someone

is spending too much time talking and not enough time working.

Are you available tomorrow? I'd like to meet with you to discuss our next step.

The practice of exchanging foreign currency can vary by country. In one country, you may

have to change your money at the airport, and in other countries you may need to buy your
