Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a
living. One night I went to pick up a passenger at
2:30
AM. When I arrived to collect, I
found the building was dark except for a single
light in a ground
floor window.
I walked to the door and knocked, “Just
a minute,” answered a weak, elderly voice.
After a long pause, the
door opened. A small woman in her eighties stood
before me. By her
side was a small
suitcase.
I took the suitcase to the
car, and then returned to help the woman. She took
my arm and we
walked slowly toward the
car.
She
kept
thanking
me
for
my
kindness.
“It’s
nothing,”
I
told
her.
“I
just
try
to
treat
my
passengers the way I would want my
mother treated.”
“Oh, you’re
such a good man.” She said. When we got into the
taxi, she gave me an address,
and then
asked, “Could you drive through
downtown?”
“It’s not the
shortest way,” I answered quickly.
“Oh, I’m in no hurry,” she said. “I’m
on my way to a hospice
(
临终医院
). I
don’t
have any
family left. The doctor says I
don’t have very long.”
I
quietly
reached
over
and
shut
off
the
meter
(
计价器
).
For
the
next
two
hours,
we
drove
through
the
city.
She
showed
me
the
building
where
she
had
once
worked,
the
neighborhood
where she had
lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a
ballroom where she had gone
dancing as
a girl.
Sometimes she’d ask me to slow
down in front of a particular building and would
sit staring
into the darkness, saying
nothing.
At dawn, she suddenly said,”
I’m tired. Let’s go now.” We drove in silence to
the address she
had given me.
“How much do I owe you?” she
asked.
“Nothing.” I
said.
“You have to make a
living,” she answered. “Oh, there are other
passengers,” I answered.
1
Almost without
thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto
me tightly. Our hug ended
with her
remark
, “You gave an old woman a little
moment of joy.”

much. You

live
for
today
not
tomorrow.
This
means
that
you
enjoy
having
a
good time.
If
you
sleep

up

,
you
are
probably
a
very
nervous
person.

believe
in
yourself.

NBA star Yao Ming has a restaurant in
the USA. The restaurant sells many famous dishes.

said.
:

you know about these endangered animals?
Sharks, the king of the ocean, are in
danger. Each year about 75 million sharks are

bears’ stomachs and use it
as
traditional
Chinese
medicine.

“How many common English words were
invented by Shakespeare?”
How long did it take people to find the
answer to this question 15 years ago? And now! You
can google it and find the answer
immediately!
Google is the
most popular Internet search
engine

was invented
by
two
students,
Larry
Page

Sergey
Brin.

met
in
1993,

they
were
studying
computer science at
Stanford University, USA. They dreamed of
producing something that could
also
answer any question in seconds.
Internet search engines at that time
were slow and gave many websites that weren’t
useful. In
January 1996, Page and Brin
decided to make a better and faster search engine.
They thought the
results should be
based on the most popular websites.
Nobody would give them money for their
project, so they used their own money. They also
borrowed money from family and friends.
Then, in 1998, they were given a cheque for
$$100,000,
and they started their own
company(
公司
). Their first
office was in a friend’s
garage(
车库
).The
company
name
is
Google,
a

mathematics.

worldwide because it was

and
correct.
By
2002
it
was
the
biggest
search
engine
on
the
Internet.
Now,
more
questions have been answered by Google
than any other Internet service, from sport to

information will be
put on the
Internet, so that everybody can find everything.
